Implicit in the design guidance is the fact that many design elements of infiltration and filtration systems can minimize the maintenance burden and maintain pollutant removal efficiency. The thicker of the two resulting designs is employed. Base/subbases thickness for supporting traffic is determined using structural design methods. Base/subbase thickness is determined for water storage using hydrologic sizing and/or dynamic modeling over time. This section provides information on design considerations, criteria and specifications for permeable pavement. Permeable pavement may provide additional benefits, including reducing the need for de-icing chemicals, and providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing surface. Green Infrastructure: Permeable pavement can be an important tool for retention and detention of stormwater runoff.
